Most of us recognize the Confederate battle flag as a symbol of the south. Also referred to as the Southern Cross, this flag has some very strong associations. For some, these are positive, but for others, they're quite negative. Some people see the Confederate flag as a proud symbol of the south, and an emblem of their heritage. Other people are likely to see it as a reminder of blue laws and segregation, as well as other racist institutions. A large number of extreme hate groups - more than five hundred by one count - also use this flag as a symbol. That makes the issue even more complicated.
Many people believe that the Confederate battle flag was the national flag, too. However, this isn't true - in fact, it's not even the only battle flag used, and the national flag changed three times over the course of the Civil War. There were actually more than a hundred and eighty different battle flags used in the Confederacy. Some of them looked like the Southern Cross we're most familiar with, but others bore little resemblance to it.
Display of the Confederate flag is a big deal for lots of people, because almost no one can agree on exactly what it stands for. While this flag acts as a symbols of the south's racist heritage for some, it's a sign of pride for many others. There are even some groups, mostly outside the US, who've used the Confederate flag to signify a general sense of rebellion, completely outside its historical context.
That's what makes displaying the flag as part of a state flag, at a sporting event, or on a public building a big deal. The Confederate battle flag can mean a lot to people, and it can also be seen as an attack. Southern state legislatures have struggled with this issue for nearly twenty years.
Many of them still display this flag on various occasions and in various locations. It should be remembered that just because someone displays the Confederate flag, they're not necessarily making a statement about race.
Display of the Confederate flag is, for many, a personal point of pride. That means that many displays of the flag aren't done out of a racist motivation. There are some that do mean this, however, and if you're thinking about displaying this flag, you should keep that in mind.
The flag is a big symbol of pride in the south. However, the fact that the Ku Klux Klan and similar groups have used it as their own symbol means that there can't help but be other associations. Display your Confederate flag carefully, and be willing to explain calmly what it means to you.
This flag is a popular symbol of southern pride, but its adoption by the Ku Klux Klan and other racist organizations means that it has some other associations, too. That means you should display it carefully, and be ready to calmly explain what the Confederate flag means to you.
