Business Owners Versus Thieves End In A Tie

Martha and Greg owned the local corner grocery store in a small town. They knew most of their customers by name. Most of them were decent folks who made an honest living. The store was starting to struggle financially. It was not because they did not have enough customers. It was due to loss from local teenagers, who frequently took items from the store without paying.

Martha and Greg knew they were taking items without paying but they could never prove it. They feared they might have to close the store if something was not done. They knew most of the kids by face. The teenagers were never threatening but they did take lots of stuff. The loss was increasing and beginning to take a toll on the stores bottom line.

Martha and Greg did not really want to send a bunch of local teenagers to jail. Besides, they theorized that the kids parents were some of their regular customers. These people were not only customers but also their neighbors. They pondered about how to solve this problem. They did not want to alienate the customers by making accusations without proof. Yet if they did nothing there would be no customers and no store.

Martha and Greg knew that if they could show the parents what their kids were up too, they could stop them. These parents would not tolerate such nonsense. They had worked a lifetime to build their good reputations. They also took this sort of thing very serious. If shown the right proof they would strike change into their kids.

Martha and Greg were a small operation. They could not afford sophisticated equipment at the time without further damaging their bottom line. Furthermore, a system to cover the entire store was out of the question. They decided to try the least expensive method first.

They devised a simple plan to stop them. Martha and Greg decided to place all the most popular theft items in one area. They would keep an eye on them while they worked.

Surely they would catch one and make an association with the rest. They would finally have the evidence they needed. They knew that the thieves would eventually return to take some items. They soon found that they were too busy with the customers to watch the items. In fact their plan backfired. Since they had placed all the items together, the thieves found it easier to steal even more.

Martha and Greg were determined not to let a few misguided teenagers run them out of business. They had grown up with most of the folks in the town. They knew their neighbors would support them in their effort to turn the teens around. They also figured the teenagers did not realize what they were doing to them.
They certainly did not realize what they were doing to the other people in the neighborhood.

They were probably just like other children. They stole things to impress friends. They also probably knew there was a pretty good chance they would not be caught. Martha and Greg knew they had to be inconspicuous with their efforts to stop the kids.

One day a man was passing through town. He stopped in the store. A conversation started between Martha, Greg and the stranger. Martha and Greg told the man the kind of problem they were having. It turns out the man was a private detective.

He told Martha and Greg how he had dealt with similar situations. He said that he had been hired on numerous occasions to catch petty thieves. According to him the best way to do it is with hidden surveillance.

The man talked on. When he was about to leave, he said by the way I will send you a copy of the video I took of you. Martha and Greg said what video?

The man explained the video I took of you with the camera in my tie. In his line of work he could never be too careful, so he always wore some sort of hidden surveillance device. Martha and Greg had found the solution.

Sometimes situations arise where images may be required to prove your point. Perpetrators will not act if they know you are watching. In order to collect the evidence you need you must be inconspicuous.
