Why do we get Dry Eyes?

There are dozens of reasons why you produce tears. Occasions that are meant to joyous will make the tears start flowing, but there are many reason other than these that will make the tears come out. Healthy eyes are covered by a tear film at a continuous rate this tear film is designed to stay stable between each blink and is meant to prevent dry eyes, keeping your vision comfortable and clear.

When you eyes become irritated the tear film production is decreased allowing the tear film to break down and create dry spots creating poor vision. This will also lead to dry eyes. The condition of dry eyes is a common source of discomfort. Adults over the age of 40 experience dry eyes more often than others.

Symptoms of dry eyes include:
- Irritation in the eyes
- The eyes may feel sandy or gritty.
- Foreign body sensation, burning or itching
- Slight blurring of vision from time to time
- light sensitivity or even
- Excessive tearing.

Causes of dry eyes include:
-Poor tear quality
-Decreased tear production
-poor eye lid function
-Certain Medication

Many times environment changes can have an affect on dry eyes such as sun, wind, dry weather and hot air. Also working on a computer, driving or reading will decrease the rate of blinking which in turn increases the evaporation of tears.

If you think you may be suffering from chronic dry eye you should contact your optometrist or physician as soon as possible. When you see a doctor about your dry eye symptoms be sure to tell them how you have been feeling as far as the dry eye and let them know what kind of activity you were engaging in at the time the symptoms started.
