In the eighteenth century travel to Egypt and then to the Giza plateau was a dangerous undertaking. Even though control of area was under the Ottomon Turks the occasional visitors were likely to be robbed or killed by bandits or Arabs.
It was during the era of George Washington that interest in the Great Pyramid was renewed and new discoveries made. Edward Worthly Montague escorted Mr. Nathaniel Davison while he was on vacation and together they carefully explored the great pyramid
Davison tied a rope around his waste as his fearful aids lowered him into the consuming darkness of the well. The length of the ominous shaft was well over 100 feet, but nothing was to be found except sand debris. and rubbish.
To Davidson it seemed stranged that anyone would go through such an enormous amount of effort to dig a shaft almost 200 feet deep into the heart of the Pyramid only to come to a dead end.
Perplexed by the unanswerable dilemma Davison began to search other areas to discover other secret features. In fact he made a discovery that now bears his name, the Davison Chamber.
