The Big Island of Hawaii hosts a number of amazing waterfalls, located around the island with many of them near the city Hilo and if you are visiting this beautiful island you don't want to miss out on visiting some of them.
Only a 10 minutes drive away from Hilo, plus about 10 minutes of hiking through the wild nature you find Akaka Falls. This stunning waterfall cascades down into a pool from a height of more then 400 feet and is one of the most visited waterfalls at Big Island.
On your way up the trail to Akaka you will encounter the smaller, gorgeous waterfall named Kahuna. These two waterfalls, along with the beauty of the trail makes this hike one of you best picks for an extraordinary nature experience. Because of its easy access it's also great if you don't have much time but still want to get in touch with some beautiful landmarks of the Big Island.
At Waipi'o Valley, on the north side of the island, you also find a lot of beautiful waterfalls. This valley has an almost magical feeling to it with a lushness found in few other places.
The valley can be reached by car and it's possible to get a pretty good view from it. It's well worth the effort though to get out of the car and do a bit of hiking. There are hundreds of waterfalls here, and one of the most loved one is called Hi'ilawe. You can easily spend a day or more in this sacred valley.
Near Hilo is another spectacular waterfall, called Rainbow Falls. It drops about 80 feet into a huge pool of turquoise water. This waterfall is easy to get to, simply a short drive from Hilo and you can drive all the way upfront to it. To get the most stunning view of the falls, get there early in the morning and take a hiking trail for a few minutes and watch the sun rise over the lush rain forest surrounding this gorgeous waterfall.
North of Hilo, a bit further away than Akaka, is the World Botanical Garden. In this garden is a three level waterfall that is called Uma Uma Falls. The water pours gently into the tranquil pools and this in combination with the surroundings can give you the feeling of having arrived to paradise.
This amazing island has of course more waterfalls than is possible to review here, but these are some of the favorite picks. Enjoy the beauty that this island is providing its visitors.
